An EA insider has recently leaked a 54-page document out of Burnaby, B.C., which suggests that the game directs players towards a specific game mode. FIFA Ultimate Team is a mode where spending real money gives players a tremendous advantage, and has now been compared to gambling. Purchasing loot-boxes has been linked to gambling due to the similar rush you receive. “The features of a loot-box are similar to a slot machine,” said Keith Whyte, executive director of the U.S. national council on Problem Gaming.
“This is our goal, we want people driven to the card pack mode,” the internal documents that were provided to the CBC read. An EA spokesperson denied an interview request and wouldn’t comment on the matter. Although you can play the game without spending a dollar extra, “you’re likely to get frustrated quite fast”, said the insider.
This leads countries such as Canada and the United States to a big question, should these in-game purchases be banned? In 2018, Belgium removed the option to purchase these loot packs due to the link they had to gambling. There are multiple lawsuits underway such as the proposed class action in Vancouver, Canada.
It’s clear that EA is under a lot of pressure here, the question is whether or not they’re at fault.
Another summer in quarantine? Or a busting out, finally post-vaccination, after over a year of pandemic blues?
For these Burnaby teens looking forward to summer, the future is uncertain but looking better.
Kyle White, a high school student from Burnaby, British Columbia, feels confident that restrictions will be lifted by the summer. He hopes the majority of people will be vaccinated by July, that way he can enjoy his summer to the fullest.
“I’m a natural athlete,” White plans on staying active throughout the summer by playing basketball, soccer and going to the gym. “As more people get vaccinated, restrictions will start to loosen, and I really hope the gym, parks and fields will become more accessible,” he said.
“As long as we follow health guidelines and obey the rules, I truly believe summer 2021 will be one of a kind. However, we need to prioritize safety ahead of everything to protect our grandparents.”
Although he seems confident that restrictions will be lifted, he made it very clear that his family’s health comes first.
White had one concluding message directed to those who refuse to comply with Covid-19 regulations, “This is the final stretch, let’s continue to be responsible and get back our summer, because I’m done waiting”

One of the most well known rappers around the globe, failed to disappoint once again
Marshall Mathers, better known as Eminem, surprised many with his unannounced performance of “Lose Yourself” during the 92nd annual Academy Awards. The 47 year old born and raised in Missouri, USA, had originally blown up after starring in 8 mile, MTV awards’ Best Breakthrough Film in 2003. Mathers had written “Lose Yourself” as a song that describes a specific scene in the movie. To his surprise, the single blew up and charted worldwide becoming his most well known song of all. “Lose Yourself” now has nearly a billion streams on Spotify and is known globally as one of the greatest rap songs to ever be released. For these reasons, fans are confused as to why he would come out with a surprise, performing a song that’s 17 years old!
This performance caught the eye of many well known celebrities around the globe, specifically Billboard tweeting out saying that Eminem had the “Whole world jumping”. Although many fans were confused, as earlier stated, only a small percentage of fans were utterly disappointed, the majority were quite pleased in fact. However, it was expected for Eminem to perform a song off of his newest album for publicity purposes. Fans were happy to see him perform out of the blue, however, confusion broke out when they heard the track.
Let’s head back two weeks, January 31st, 2020. Eminem had released his most recent album, Music to be Murdered by. The album consisted of twenty tracks including features from Young MA, Ed Sheeran, and most famously, Juice WRLD. The most famous song on the album, “Godzilla”, immediately gained attention from the media all around the globe for two reasons. Firstly, Eminem somehow managed to get a feature from Juice WRLD, the American 21 year old sadly overdosed on December 8th of 2019, he was later pronounced dead. Although this was shocking, Eminem also impressed the whole world with his ability to rap at an incredible speed of 10.6 syllables per second! Thus setting a world record and beating his past time of 9.6 syllables per second in “Lose Yourself”. Although we were all expecting “Godzilla” when he initially hit the stage, Eminem later revealed that he wanted to leave fans with “A performance to remember ”. At the end of the day, Eminem is known as one of the all time greats and is on top when it comes to the music industry!
“The practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.” This being the exact definition given when searching up the definition on google. Although this is a great quick explanation, plagiarism is a much bigger subject. To start with the basics, what are some examples of plagiarism? The first thing that comes to mind would be copying and pasting off of Wikipedia for a high school assignment, however, there’s many more examples of plagiarism that we may not be aware of. Not acknowledging a source, switching words around, unintentionally plagiarizing, and submitting your peers’ old work, these are only some of many ways to plagiarize. The next question people often ask is what are the consequences of plagiarism, and why is it such a serious matter? The answer to this question is surprisingly simple, if plagiarism was allowed, there would be no originality in this world and there’s no way to define intelligence. How can we differentiate levels of intelligence if everything is a replica of a past project? The consequences of plagiarism vary, it truly depends on the context. According to NBC News, there have been several past stories where university professors have been found guilty of plagiarizing. From a student’s perspective, majority of teachers have a standard rule where all plagiarism results in an immediate failure, this is a minimal punishment. After all my research, I now fully understand the extremity of plagiarism and why it is taken so seriously by students, teachers, and professors worldwide.
